Ranking the AFC North at the midpoint of the NFL offseason

May 25, 2026
Ranking the AFC North at the midpoint of the NFL offseason

We have officially crossed the halfway point of the NFL offseason. That sounds strange to say, but the calendar doesn’t lie. 15 Sundays have passed since the Super Bowl. 15 more remain until Week 1 delivers a full slate of regular-season football, including the firstBaltimore Ravensgame of their 31st season.

USA TODAY

Before we get there comes the annual grind. OTAs are underway or rapidly approaching. Mandatory minicamps loom. Training camp debates will soon dominate headlines. OTA dates for every team are listed below:

Position battles will be overanalyzed. Injury updates will fuel unnecessary panic. Somewhere in there, optimism will convince fan bases that their teams solved every glaring issue. That makes this the perfect time for a little perspective.

The AFC North remains what it always seems to be: physical, annoying, unpredictable, and almost always one of football’s toughest divisions to navigate. There are no easy Sundays here. Even the team projected to finish last usually finds ways to make life miserable for everyone else. That said, some teams clearly feel better positioned than others.

1.Baltimore Ravens

Forget what happened last season. This is Baltimore’s division. The Ravens’ disappointing 2025 campaign didn’t erase the larger truth.

This remains one of the NFL’s most stable organizations, one led by Lamar Jackson and supported by a front office that consistently keeps the roster competitive. The coaching transition adds intrigue, but the talent remains obvious.

Trey Hendrickson helps solve a longstanding pass-rush issue. The secondary looks dangerous. The culture is intact. There are questions, sure, but the Ravens still feel like the division’s most complete team.

2.Cincinnati Bengals

A healthy Joe Burrow changes everything. Or perhaps, more accurately, ahealthier-than-usualJoe Burrow changes everything. Cincinnati’s ceiling will always be tied directly to No. 9.

If he stays upright, the Bengals can absolutely challenge Baltimore for the division crown. If he doesn’t, the conversation changes quickly. The upside remains undeniable.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers

Yes, Pittsburgh won the division. It can also be argued that the best team didn’t. That isn’t disrespect. It’s context.

Mike Tomlin always kept this team competitive. The Steelers deserve credit for their consistency, but the ship will now be steered by Mike McCarthy, who reunites with Aaron Rodgers.

That raises the intrigue level significantly. Questions remain about whether this roster is truly built to repeat, but it feels as though it absolutely is.

4. Cleveland Browns

No team offers stranger quarterback theater. Three quarterbacks believe they should start, and honestly, all three can make some sort of argument.

Still, this likely ends with Deshaun Watson under center unless something unexpected happens. That alone makes Cleveland difficult to trust.

Sophomore left-hander Dylan Volantis (8-1, 2.00, 109 strikeouts, 22 walks) heads the Longhorns’ pitching staff and ranks fourth in the country in ERA.

Freshman left fielder Anthony Pack Jr. was the SEC Freshman of the Year after leading the conference in batting average (.400) in SEC games.

Last season, Holy Cross played in the Chapel Hill Regional and lost games to North Carolina and Nebraska.

Lauren Betts shares the advice Kiki Rice said after their WNBA debut

Jumping to the professional ranks is an adjustment for everyone, even if you’re fresh off of an All-American season. FormerUCLA BruincenterLauren Bettshas found that out this spring as she’s adjusting to the WNBA in her rookie season with the Washington Mystics.

USA TODAY

Betts’ college career couldn’t have ended any better, starring for the Bruinsduring the team’s NCAA title run. Betts’ overall scoring numbers went down in her senior season but the 6’7” Betts showed she can still carry an offense throughout the tournament.

Her reward was being takenfourth overall by the Mystics. Overall, Betts has had a quiet rookie season, putting up 5.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Betts’WNBA debutdidn’t go as planned, scoring zero points but she caught up with former UCLA teammate Kiki Rice postgame who offered some words of wisdom.

“I was talking to Ki about that, I remember the first game I was so pissed. I don’t remember the last time I had zero points,” Betts said of theBird’s Eye View podcast with Sue Bird. “She’s like ‘Some days you’re going to be the shit and other days you’re going to be a fire hydrant.’ I was like ‘You’re right. I am the fire hydrant today and that’s OK.’ and that’s just how it is your rookie year. I think the biggest thing is that you can’t compare your process to other people.”

It’s tough for the sixUCLA BruinsWNBA draft picks to not get compared to one another as they’re all beginning their professional journey shortly after a dominant season of college basketball.

Sean McVay still sounds haunted by Eagles’ wild win over Rams

Sean McVay still sounds haunted by Eagles’ wild win over Rams

Some matchups just become oddly one-sided, even when the teams involved should be evenly matched. That has quietly become the case whenever thePhiladelphia EaglesandLos Angeles Ramsshare a field. They aren't rivals per se, but there are times when it feels like this is where it's headed.

USA TODAY

Over the past four seasons, no NFL team has defeated theRamsmore often than theEagles, not even the teams in their division. Not theSan Francisco 49ers. Not theSeattle Seahawks. Not theArizona Cardinals, all division rivals who see Sean McVay's team far more regularly. Philadelphia has somehow become the franchise that Los Angeles simply can't seem to shake. The most recent chapter probably explains why the scars remain fresh. Their latest meeting delivered the kind of drama that leaves both fan bases emotionally exhausted. The Rams built a comfortable lead and appeared firmly in control, only for the Eagles to claw their way back into the fight. What followed felt less like a standard NFL finish and more like controlled chaos.

Philadelphia blocked one field goal. Then, they blocked another.

The second became the moment everyone remembers, asJordan Davis scooped the loose ball, rumbled to the end zone, and turned a defensive special-teams dagger into an unforgettable punctuation mark. Apparently, Sean McVay hasn't fully moved on. During a recent sit-down onBussin' With The Boys, the Rams head coach was asked about the game, and judging by his tone, the memory still sounds painfully vivid.

More than eight months have passed, yet McVay discussed Jordan Davis' block-and-score sequence with the kind of detail that suggests the replay still visits him uninvited. Honestly, that makes perfect sense. NFL coaches are wired differently. Most fans remember the result. Coaches remember every missed assignment, every breakdown, every decision they wish they could have back.

For an offensive mind as detail-obsessed as McVay, losing in that fashion probably doesn't fade cleanly. And why would it? Games like that don't simply sting because you lost. They sting because you had control, watched it disappear, and then got buried beneath one of the season's strangest finishes.

For Eagles fans, it was exhilarating. For Sean McVay? It still sounds like a horror story with Jordan Davis playing the final villain.

Author Kennedy Ryan Details Why Mental Health Is 'at the Core for A Lot of My Work' (Exclusive)

  • Her new book Score features a main character navigating bipolar disorder, while also highlighting Black excellence

  • “Mental health is something that is kind of core for a lot of my work,” Ryan tells PEOPLE

For award-winning authorKennedy Ryan, mental health is at the center of her work for a reason.

PEOPLE recently spoke to the RITA-winning author about her new bookScore, and how one of her main characters, a screenwriter named Verity Hill, lives with bipolar disorder.

Scoresees Verity reconnecting with a former flame, musician Wright "Monk" Bellamy, as they are forced to work together on a Harlem Renaissance biopic more than 10 years after a gut-wrenching breakup. Relatedly, the book explores the importance of protecting one's mental health.

“I always say that a good second chance has certain elements,” Ryan tells PEOPLE. “Because if I'm buying that you're soulmate level in love, then why did you break up in the first place? I need to understand what went wrong.”

Ryan adds that once Verity reunites with Monk, she needs to know what’s different the second time around.

“And so that's what this whole journey is,” the novelist tells PEOPLE. “It's first unpacking what went wrong... For me, it really gave me an opportunity to talk about mental illness, mental health and how vigilant people who are living with bipolar disorder have to be about their mental health, and about their mental state and what it's like to love someone who is navigating that.”

While readers may have been hungry for more from the long-awaited second installment in theHollywood Renaissanceseries, Ryan says Verity needed that break from Monk between college and now “to understand a lot about herself, and understand the diagnosis.”

The screenwriter also used that time to live her life on her own terms.

“Mental health is something that is kind of core for a lot of my work,” Ryan tells PEOPLE. “If you look atBefore I Let Go, and depression, and you look atThis Could Be Us, andNeurodivergence, andCan't Get Enough, and dementia and Alzheimer's, it is something that's really important to me.”

Ryan, who navigates her own depression, is an avid supporter of May as Mental Health Awareness Month.

“I really am constantly trying to destigmatize the discourse around mental illness and mental health,” she says.

Ryan adds that there are people in her life in their 40s and 50s who have just been diagnosed, but that she sees how having the proper support and tools has made all the difference.

“Seeing what intervention did, seeing what therapy and medication and an actual diagnosis did, how transformative it was for their life, really inspired me,” she tells PEOPLE. “This is [the] discourse I want to have.”
